The Finishing Touches That Maximise Brilliance & Beauty
While most shoppers focus on the 4 Cs—cut, colour, clarity and carat—there’s more behind a diamond’s sparkle than meets the eye.
Polish and symmetry are two subtle but vital aspects of diamond grading that can significantly influence a diamond’s brilliance, light performance, and overall elegance.
✨ Think of polish and symmetry as the finishing finesse—like buffing a mirror or aligning the facets of a kaleidoscope.
Polish refers to the smoothness of a diamond’s surface after it’s been cut and faceted. A well-polished diamond allows light to enter and exit the stone cleanly and efficiently, maximising brilliance and fire.
| Grade | Description |
|---|---|
| Excellent 🌟 | Surface is smooth and flawless under 10x magnification |
| Very Good 👍 | Very slight marks, not visible to the naked eye |
| Good ✔️ | Minor marks, may impact brilliance slightly |
| Fair/Poor ⚠️ | Noticeable polish lines, dull appearance under close inspection |
Symmetry refers to how precisely a diamond’s facets are aligned and proportioned. Poor symmetry can cause light to leak out of the sides or bottom, reducing sparkle and making the stone look off-centre or uneven.
| Grade | Description |
|---|---|
| Excellent 🌟 | Facets perfectly aligned; light bounces cleanly |
| Very Good 👍 | Tiny misalignments not visible without magnification |
| Good ✔️ | Some facet misplacement; may impact sparkle |
| Fair/Poor ⚠️ | Noticeable imbalance; affects brilliance and shape |
💡 Polish = how smooth the surface is. Symmetry = how well the design is balanced.
✅ Yes, prioritise it if:
❌ It’s less critical if:
Not always. But poor symmetry may make a diamond look “off” in its shape, and poor polish can slightly dull the sparkle.
Not directly—but a rough surface can trap dirt more easily and require more cleaning.
Absolutely. “Very Good” grades for both polish and symmetry are perfectly acceptable for most buyers, especially in well-cut stones.
Tip to Mitigate: Aim for at least “Very Good” polish and symmetry, and only stretch to “Excellent” if you’re investing in a high-grade solitaire or large centre stone.
Before buying your diamond:
Polish and symmetry may be quiet performers, but they’re vital finishing touches in creating a diamond that truly sparkles.
If cut is the heart of a diamond, polish and symmetry are its finishing grace notes—refining its radiance, enhancing light performance, and showcasing craftsmanship you’ll cherish for a lifetime.
