Diamond Information

When it comes to buying a diamond engagement ring, there are a few bits of information we recommend you have in order to ensure you understand your purchase.

The starting point for diamond education starts with the 4 C’s -we, however, have seven.

Diamond Cut

The cut of a diamond relates to how well the diamond is cut to reflect light.

Each certified diamond is graded from excellent; very good; good; fair; poor.

We recommend diamonds with an ‘excellent’ or a ‘very good’ cut only

Diamond Carat

The carat of a diamond relates to the weight of the diamond. Roughly, this relates to the size of a diamond. Generally, the larger the carat the more expensive.

There are, however, clever ways to get the most out of your diamond carat – for example, you can find diamonds which are ‘well spread’ meaning the carat weight may be low but it gives the appearance of a larger diamond. It is important to keep an eye on the ‘cut’ grade of a diamond which is well spread as it may not reflect light.

Many diamonds we source are well spread and also excellent cut resulting in the best of both characteristics.

Diamond Colour

The colour of a diamond relates to its lack of colour. The less colour a diamond has, the more rare it is and the more expensive it is.

Diamond Clarity

All diamonds have very small inclusions. These inclusions relate to the diamond’s clarity.

It is important to have a diamond which is ‘eye clean’ which means that there are no visible inclusions to the naked eye.

Diamond Certificate

We at Bespoke Diamonds would advise on getting a diamond which is certified by one of the three main certificate bodies (GIA; IGI or HRD)

An uncertified diamond or a diamond from a lesser certificate body can be less expensive and may be an option for someone on a budget.

The certificate confirms the above characteristics of a diamond (carat; colour; clarity; cut).

Generally diamonds 0.30 carats and above are certified
